The Planning and Development Committee has included House Bill 6831 on the Public Hearing agenda for Monday, February 3. “AN ACT CONCERNING TRANSIT-ORIENTED COMMUNITIES” is a policy proposal that has evolved over the years and addresses the housing shortage and climate change crises. Two important things for me were that input from residents, elected government officials, and stakeholders across the spectrum was considered throughout the process; and this 2025 proposal is not a mandate on our towns but an opportunity to opt-in. I believe our municipalities will have the opportunity to increase their housing supply near transit and introduce or expand "missing middle" housing options.
I support this bill moving out of Committee and look forward to the opportunity to record my vote when it comes before the Senate.
Connecticut housing prices are among the most expensive in the country, and it's largely driven by missing housing stock. For young people like myself to afford to live here, we need more available rental and starter home opportunities - and we can increase the amount of affordable housing responsibly and creatively, through brownfield remediation and transit-oriented development.
